Actor/Activist: An interview with Lim Kay Siu

Battling injustice through the power of ukulele

Many Singaporeans recognise Lim Kay Siu from his work on sitcoms like Phua Chu Kong Pte Ltd, but I was introduced to him through his work on the stage. More recently, I’ve been learning about Kay Siu’s livestreaming, on various social media platforms, with his wife Neo Swee Lin. It’s not every day that you find out you know a duo whose chosen weapons for combatting authoritarianism are ukuleles.

It seemed a natural fit to have my conversation with Kay Siu be the first podcast episode of this series. I wanted to learn more about his journey in becoming more and more vocal about the causes he feels strongly about. In this podcast, we talk about his acting work in Singapore and abroad, Asian representation in western media, and how the NeoKELELims are venturing more into activism.

More of Kay Siu and Sweet Lin’s work can be found on their Twitch and YouTube channels, the NeoKELELims, and links to the music included in this podcast can be found here: Time, NeoKELELims Theme Song, Die Gedanken sind frei, Give Me Just A Little More Time (performed at a rally against the death penalty in Singapore).
